His style name is Yu Fu and Yu Hu, nickname is Xia An, hometown is Guangdong Fanyu. After graduating from the Science School of Imperial Academy, he studied in Japan. He used to be transport system chief of the Northern Government. In 1920, he supported Jin Cheng, Zhou Zhaoxiang to establish Chinese Painting Research Association. In 1923, he was appointed Guangzhou's finance minister by Sun Yat-sen. In 1925, he turned to cultural organizations and in 1927, he served as director of Guoxue Museum of Peking University. He organized the first National Art Exhibition in 1929, proposed and established influential and authoritative national "Chinese Painting Association" in Shanghai in 1931. In 1933, he set up Shanghai Museum and served as a variety of leadership positions in international bodies. During the Japanese Aggression Resistance War, he once refuged in Hong Kong and lived by selling paintings. After the founding of new China, he served as president of Beijing Fine Art Academy , the member of the Central People's Government Administration Council and deputy director of Chinese Culture And History Museum. Ye Gongchuo was an important artist and organizer in modern history of Chinese painting. Ye Gongchuo was a well-known intellectual and collector in the 20th century. He wrote and edited many ancient books. He was good at calligraphy and painting, with a graceful and attractive style. He mainly painted orchid, bamboo, pine and stone, and loved painting bamboo particularly. In his later years, he donated his possession of books, paintings, artifacts to the museum of Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Suzhou, Chengdu and other cities.
