In 1938, he joined the Japanese Aggression Resistance Column of Communist Party and the East River, worked as chief editor of North China's "March Express," "March Paintings". After the founding of PRC, he was engaged in sculpture in Beijing People's Arts Studio, Beijing Arts Company and Beijing Fine Art Academy. He once served as deputy head of People's Heroes Monument Sculpture Creative Team, the professor of North China University, Beijing Normal University, Beijing Arts Academy, the member of the fifth, sixth and seventh CPPCC National Committee. Zhang Songhe was one of elder generation of artists. During the war years, he experienced fire and committed to the revolution; in the peace times, he immersed himself in creation and served the community.
