The Calligraphy and Painting World of Chen Lemin(陈乐民) will meet audience on 3rd Apr. 2011 at Art Museum of Beijing Fine Art Academy and it will last to 10th Apr. The exhibition is hosted by Counsellor Office of the State Council, Central Research Institute of Culture and History, Beijing Artists Association and Beijing Fine Art Academy, organized by Art Museum of Beijing Fine Art Academy. This exhibition included about 80 paintings created by Mr.Chen which conveys the scholar’s culture achievements. The paintings and calligraphies will provide us a clue of his spirit and bring us a true Chen Lemin.

          Amateur’s explanation of literati painting

          Chen Lemin is the director of Institute of European Studies of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences，although he is not a professional artist, he started to learn art when he was very young, his teacher is Mr.Wang Renshan(王仁山) who lived in Beijing and major in the mountain and water painting. Mr.Chen participated in the exhibitions of Four Friends Art Association and Rain. After graduated from the university he couldn’t maintain his art studies because of his work and political reasons. As one of pioneers in diplomatic field, he has a broad view besides his deep Chinese traditional cultivation; he also began his research on the study of European after fifty years old. Mr,Chen work with word all his life but he insists on writing with brush and has a large sum of reading note, only until 1980s Mr.Chen restarted his art career.

          Because of reasons mentioned above, Mr.Chen is different from other artist, in this exhibition we feel the inner spirit of artist just as Painting and Artist are Similar to Each Other. Mr.Chen’s calligraphy is poems which extents his own feelings, his painting Old Willows conveys a feeling of elegant and free from vulgarity.

          Mr.Chen’s Calligraphy on Certificate

          In Beijing Fine Art Academy’s collections there is a Qi Baishi’s certificate which is awarded by World Peace Council, besides a pigeon from Picasso, there are several lines wrote by Mr.Chen: On the name of World Peace Council, Qi Baishi was awarded by the committee because of his contribution to peace. These words were written by Mr.Chen. After Qi Baishi passed away, the certificate is collected by Beijing Fine Art Academy and now it is the earliest art work of Mr.Chen.

          Documents like reading notes, dissertations are included in this exhibition, besides, we also picked out some representative paintings of Mr.Chen; from these art works audience will have a comprehensive impression of the modern literati artist just like Mr.Chen said: the most important thing in art is literati character.
