Time flew by and soon it was Chinese New Year's Eve. Every family was busy with shopping for festive items, hanging up lanterns to brighten their homes, and cooking a sumptuous feast for the New Year's Eve. The Beijing Fine Art Academy was busy too. At home, the Elegance and Savour exhibition celebrated the festive Chinese New Year. Abroad, Qi Baishi's masterpieces were displayed in Kyoto, starting a feast of cultural exchange.
The Qi Baishi: Master of Modern Chinese Painting exhibition was held at the Kyoto National Museum on January 30, 2019. This exhibition marked the largest-scale display of Qi Baishi's works in Kyoto in 32 years. The exhibition brought together collections from both the Beijing Fine Art Academy and the Kyoto National Museum, showcasing over 100 works including landscapes, flowers, birds, aquatic life, insects and plants, calligraphy, and seal engraving. The exhibition featured a rich variety of categories and excellent artworks. It was also part of the 2018 Fine Art Exhibition Season: A Tour of China's Art Museums organized by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the People's Republic of China.
In 1922, Qi Baishi's works were exhibited in Japan at the Sino-Japanese Joint Painting Exhibition, which greatly enhanced his reputation. Almost a century later, on the 40th anniversary of the Treaty of Peace and Friendship between China and Japan, Qi Baishi's art was exhibited again in a large scale. This was a chance to foster more cultural understanding between the Chinese and Japanese people.
The exhibition not only showcased Qi Baishi's paintings, calligraphy, seal engraving, manuscripts, diaries, and painting tools from the collection of the Beijing Fine Art Academy but also featured over ten painting works from the collection of the Kyoto National Museum. These works originated from the former collection of Yakichiro Suma, a Japanese diplomat during the Republic of China era (1912-1949), and among them are pieces exhibited by Qi Baishi during his visit to Japan in 1922, which hold significant research value.
