  • show time:2018-09-30 to 2018-11-04
  • Organizer:The Museum of Fine Arts Budapest, Beijing Fine Art Academy
  • venue:Beijing Fine Art Academy
This exhibition is not only the first themed exhibition on Toulouse-Lautrec held in China, but it is also the fourth art exhibition after the special exhibitions of Munkácsy Mihály, Qi Baishi and Franz Liszt, jointly organized by Beijing Fine Art Academy and Hungary. There are more than 90 works on display in this exhibition, covering paintings, drawings, lithographs and posters. Among them, precious prints on paper are exhibited every two years.

All the prints on display in this exhibition unmodifiedly record the luxury of the Moulin Rouge in Paris at night, the privacy of the romantic field and the popularity of theater culture. He once said, “I describe things as they are. I don’t judge them.” His works are exactly as he said. No matter she is rich or poor, there is no praise or criticism, whether she is a smashing singer and dance star in front of the stage or a seemingly insignificant night girl, Toulouse-Lautrec portrays their most realistic living conditions. The prints in the exhibition enable us living in the 21st century to understand the importance of printmaking as a medium of expression in Lautrec’s entire artistic career, and they further give a glimpse of the little-known night world of Paris in the late 19th century through Lautrec’s strokes.

Lautrec’s short but most creative artistic career belongs to the same period as the prosperity of the entertainment industry in Paris and the golden age of modern printmaking. To create an atmosphere of Paris at the end of the 19th century in the exhibition, we have combined Lautrec’s original prints with huge posters, Paris Moulin Rouge and street posters, old historical photos of Paris, and the cancan music composed by Offenbach, viewers can review the history that has never disappeared, and experience the romantic streets of Paris that are still dotted with Lautrec’s posters today.
