At the beginning of the new year, “Beijing Fine Art Academy Painters Small SizeOilPainting Exhibition” which organized by Beijing Fine Art Academy will beheldonFebruary 26 in Art Museum of Beijing Fine Art Academy. It’s also an exhibition about small size painting after last year’s.

The magnificent landscape can be expressed within inches.

Nowadays, some painters are so obsessed with magnificent visual effect that the size of paintings is becoming bigger even without any meaning. The trend also made people ignoring small size paintings. So this exhibition appeal to painters to recognize the importance of small size paintings. Poems ofDu Fu, the Chinese Tang Dynasty poet referred to the way of creating ancient Chinese landscape paintings. The magnificent landscape is expressed by the way of “travelling ten thousand miles” and “searching every crag”, which transcend time and space with Chinese characteristicswithin inches. “Netherlands Small School” whichserve the public was born in emerging bourgeois country Netherlands in the 17thcentury in Europe. Artists slipped the leash from the grand production of palace and Catholic themes. They left a distinct mark in the European art history by realistic and poetic small paintings with observing people, landscape and still life around them. Lotsof artists of French Impressionist and Russia Exhibition School left their name in art history with small size paintings. So small size paintings have great characters, ideaistic stature andspirit.

“To the majority, although subtle” in <Golden Mean> can be used to describe the small size painting. “Subtle” means both details of the picture and painting techniques of artist. In an ordinary sense, the length of viewing distance for a small size painting is the length of an arm. In this distance, artist must have transcendental performance ability and painting skills. “Majority” describes the fulfilling contents and idea condition of a painting. Xu Beihong said: “exploring the nature, finding the truth of life”. The art form has been more abundant at present. Only combining artistic conception and lingering charm of Chinese painting, the “majority” of Chinese oil painting can be achieved.

     Spiritual world of artists

Organizing small size painting exhibition for two years, Beijing Fine Art Academy want to awaken artists’enthusiasm for small size painting and encourage them to search the creation rules. Beijing Fine Art Academy also hope more artists have both abilities of drawing big size paintings and intelligence of creating small size paintings. Six artists who works in Beijing Fine Art Academy willparticipate in this exhibition. They are Bai Yuping, Ma Lin, Lei Bo, Luo Min, Li Jiangfeng and Zhuang Zhong.

The main subject matter of Bai Yuping’s painting is landscape. His paintings can not only bring pleasingvisual experience, but also make complicated things simple and concisewhich are not boring. Artist simplifies different objects to basicvisual symbols such as shapes, colors, textures, scratches, brushwork. Those extracted essences can arouse sympathy among the audience because of associating with audiences’background of humanityat the same time. <Sound of the Autumn> and <Field of the Autumn> will be published in the exhibition. In his paintings, audience can find an independent world, which expressingthe freedom in poet’s dream.

The performance of light is an important feature in Ma Lin’s oil painting. As Chinese oil painter, Ma Lin always stands in the perspective of modern humans to survey, analyse, express the charm of light, and builds special images by using light. In the exhibition, whether the series “Ju Ma River” with landscape subjects or <Thunder> with figure subjects, willdevise a dialogue between light, space and vision on the multi-angle and multi-level.

The art works of Lei Bo which havetheme of “Imoression” are based on Buddhism Art. He will show the Grottoart in his heart. Understanding of Buddhism is different from understanding of Buddhism Art. Lei Bo’s paintings are also different from the Grottoes Murals. Relatively speaking, he tended to split original circumstance into pieces in Grottoes, rather than show the coherence, authenticity and accuracy. In Lei Bo’s painting, time and space are complicated, special artistic expressive techniques make audience travel through different time and space: ancient modern and future, East and West, Chinaor India…We can see the understanding and expression of religionary “fragmentation” in Lei Bo’s works, they transmit the national culture, tradition and modern in a form of radiation.

In 2015, Luo Min held a painting exhibition in Museum of Beijing Fine Art Academy and officially became an artist of Beijing Fine Art Academy. Luo Min's works can be divided into multiple series, from her early fame “Female soldier”, until recent work series “Portrait”, Luo Min’s painting style changes from direct express subjective description to translate the object to deep levelartistic conception. As curator Huang Du said: “she choses these dailyand simple things as targets of depicting and analyzing, which interpret the essence of living aesthetics and performance visual aesthetics of painting.” The works of Luo Min in exhibition include “Empty bottle”, “Portrait” and “Wild chrysanthemum”.

Zhuang Zhong’s paintings are mostly landscape painting created in 2015. They are divided into series “Miscellaneain Europe”, “Shadows in early autumn”, “Recluse” and “Pond”. We seem to hear songs from “The Book of Odes”. It’s silent song and peaceful landscape. Zhuang Zhong is good at using classical and modern oil painting brushwork to depict quiet view. The surface of water seems frozen, match the gone outline and sporadic clouds.
In Zhuang Zhong’s works, we can also find the intention of artist. In the picture,we can experience the visual and aural dimension the artist set in two-dimensional space. That means effect of synesthesia. This effect can also be reflected between the analogy of “big size” and “small size”. Looking or speaking, visual or auditory, big or small are not “distinction” in the rigid meaning, but “syngeneic” in a general sense.

The exhibition will last until March 6.
