“Mo Ce Print Painting Exhibition” which is hosted by Beijing Fine Art Academy will be held from March 20 to March 25 in 2015 in Art Museum of Beijing Fine Art Academy. This exhibition will show the creation experience of Chinese famous print painter Mo Ce systematically for the first time by the 79 masterpiece created from 50s of last century to the beginning of this century.
The new print painting campaign in our country was initiated by Lu Xun. After the founding of New China, print began showing the peace and construction, describing the scene of labor and glorious landscape of China. Mo Ce is one of the most brilliant landscape print painters in this period, a landscape, and he is also one of the founders of China Ex-libris Research Association.
Mo Ce was born in 1928 at Xuyi in Jiangsu province, in 1948, he devoted himself in revolution, and became a print painter by himself. After the found of new China, he engaged in water & electric work in a long time, and created print paintings in hid free time. Because of the need of working, Mo Ce often went to water conservancy construction site, traveled both north and south of the motherland, so his life and artistic career are closely related with water.
In July 26 of 1956, People’s Daily published his chromatic woodcut "Hold a Fish", and he won the great fame by this work. He created more than 800 works from 60s and 70s of last century, and won the “Lu Xun Print Award”.
Poet Ai Qing praise him as “the singer of water”, printmaker Chao Gai said: “Water, almost become the life line of the print art of Mo Ce”. He said by himself: “I love print painting, I love water. I devote myself to showing water by print, reflecting things associated with water, reflecting the social life related with water.”
Mo Ce is good at both black and white woodcut and coloured woodcut. The art style of him is simple and veiled, but the composition is changing, and the technique is diverse. The beauty of line is one of the characteristic of landscape print. In the 80s of last century, he used parallel horizontal lines to show landscapes, clouds and other images. Gu Yuan appraised his painting: “The special usage of line helps his work add the misty artistic conception which white and black print is not easy to express.” What’s more, Mo Ce created a unique type of radiation round line to add the artistic conception, totally showed his engraving capabilities. Many works of Mo Ce are contain the style of decoration, the decorative effect most come from the rhythm of composition, and it is unique in the modern print painting history.

Mo Ce was born at Xuyi in Jiangsu province in 1928, and devoted himself to revolution in 1948, he learned to be a famous print painter by himself. After the founding of new China, he was appointed as CPC Changshu County Propaganda Department director, vice minister of Publicity Department of the Communist Youth League Changshu City, edit of Jiangsu Youth magazine, exhibition design of Zhi Huai Museum and water resources department, chief editor of art of water and electric power press agency, full-time vice chairman of China Water Conservancy and Electric Power Literary Arts Association, member of Chinese Artists Association, Print Art Committee of the Chinese Artists Association, director of the International Liaison Department and executive director of the Chinese Print Artists Association and other position. His works are collected by National Art Museum of China, Lu Xun Museum, Tianjin Museum, Guangzhou Museum of Art, Jinan Art Museum, Jiangsu Art Museum, British Museum, Repin Museum, Japan Kanagawa Museum and other agencies. He has won the “Lu Xun printmaking prize outstanding printmaker in fifties and sixties”, silver award of Eighth National Ex-libri Exhibition and other awards. Holding Fish won the silver award in National Youth Art Exhibition in 1957 and Seventh World Youth Festival Art Exhibition, Spring of Sanxia won the outstanding print award of Ninth National Print Exhibition. He has published Mo Ce Woodcut Album, Part of Woodcut Works of Mo Ce, Mo Ce Black and White Woodcut Work, Mo Ce Print Painting, Follow the Trace of Water------Mo Ce Woodcut Anthology and so on.
