Qian Songyan’s Select Painting Exhibition will be opened on 20th Jul. 2012 at Art Museum of Beijing Fine Art Academy, the exhibition is hosted by China Artists Association, Beijing Artists Association, Beijing Fine Art Academy and Wuxi Museum. As an important artist in Chinese painting transition period in 20th century, Qian’s painting’s revolution is related to a lot of Chinese painting essence. Recognizing and analyzing Qian’s paintings will bring a lot of inspiration to Chinese painting’s development in 21st century.
Qian donated hundreds of paintings and his house in Wuxi to the government, some paintings displayed in this exhibition are from this donation. About sixty paintings from Wuxi museum covered different periods of Qian’s art career. Flower-and-bird paintings collected by Beijing Fine Art Academy will also be sent to Wuxi museum this year, the exchange between south and north artists have significant meaning today.
New style landscape painting
Qian’s painting is a very outstanding in 20th century Chinese painting, he used Qi Baishi’s “likeness and unlikeness” theory to mountain-and-water painting, and brought it from realistic to emotion involved. He symbolized red stones and pine tree with revolution spirit and symbolized mountain-and-water with culture spirit.
Qian believed that traditional techniques still have its meaning; he discarded the simple methods of adding factories, red flags or trains etc. to mountain-and-water painting, but use vigorous firms to reflect socialism spirit. Some common sceneries became quite unique and charming under Qian’s brushes, like Yang Jialing and Zaoyuan in Yan’an, Qing Shuitang and Shaoshan in Hu’nan, Meiyuan new village in Nanjing etc.
Qian’s Art Development
Qian Songyan’s Select Painting Exhibition is divided into three parts according to Qian’s art styles and themes: study of traditional techniques, new scenery, return to the origin.
Qian learned his paintings from Shenzhou,Shitao, Shixi in Ming and Qing dynasties. Audience can find Qian’s copy of old master’s paintings in the first section; and can learn the artist’s solid traditional foundation. After Republic of China’s establishment, with the change in thoughts and emotion Qian fond new way to fulfill new culture policy of “mountain-and-water painting serves the public”, in this period, his paintings depicted great changes in China. After 1980s, Qian emphasized on his homeland’s scenery and natural scenery, these paintings are displayed in the last exhibition section.
Qian integrated his painting with time’s requirement, and combined with time spirit, national character and personal style, his art influenced a lot of artists. Qian Songyan’s Select Painting Exhibition researched Qian’s art development, and will arouse audience and public’s discusses on Chinese paintings’ revolution.
