Huang Binhong is a great Chinese traditional landscape painting master in 20th century, few person could understand his painting when he was alive, even today the deep understanding of his painting is still very hard. During 1980s, people gradually realized Huang Binhong’s worth, then a lot of followers appeared, but most of them can not understand the spirit of his painting, they only copy the appearance of Huang’s painting; they also can’t understand Huang’s art is not only based on his comprehension of Chinese art but also on his pursuit of Bimo(笔墨) language and Chinese culture spirit; they also can not understand Huang’s research on the old saying Learn from the nature, art is from heart, they ignored the importance of facing the nature. Because of reasons above, these followers couldn’t grab Huang’s art spirit and couldn’t develop their own art style.
Huang Binhong absorbs traditional culture’s essence, referring nature, Huang find the break-though point from the inner of traditional culture, Lin Sanzhi, Li Keran transmit Huang’s spirit separately on calligraphy and mountain and water painting, they also made deeper research: Lin Sanzhi not only referring Huang’s painting but also his calligraphy, he inherits Huang’s calligraphy theory of learn both from stele and calligraphy copy book, he also uses the painting method when write calligraphy and develops his own calligraphy style which is an important break though in calligraphy history. Li Keran not only researched the painting skill of making ink grumous, and learn Huang’s art skill of go out draw sketches to learn from the nature, he created the beauty of grumous ink, what’s more he improved Chinese traditional landscape painting in a brand new history period and eventually formed his own style. Li Keran referred the western art’s sketch and backlighting, he joints them with traditional Bimo (笔墨), he gradually change from make sketches when painting outside to finish his painting in the open air. Besides, he also joins his impression and his sketches to form free hand painting, in this way he makes his landscape painting become new.
From Huang Binhong, Lin Sanzhi and Li Keran, we find the strong vitality of Chinese traditional art, inherit is Chinese art’s spirit, transmit is Chinese art’s soul, therefore the exhibition didn’t stop on the analysis of Mimo (笔墨) and style in Huang’s painting, but from the art inheritance aspect to make a comprehensive research on Huang Binhong, Lin Sanzhi and Li Keran, the research will reveal how Huang Binhong learn the essence from the nature and how Lin Sanzhi, Li Keran inherit Huang’s art spirit and develop their own art style. Their same origin but different art paths are worth our contemplation.
