Three Hundred Seals----Qi Baishi’s Seal Carving Development

         The exhibition Three Hundred Seals-----Qi Baishi’s Seal Carving Development will be opened on 15th May 2012 at Beijing Fine Art Academy, besides some seals were carved for family members, students and other person, most of the three hundred seals were carved for Qi Baishi himself. These seals owns very distinguish status in Qi’s art works, they provided important historical materials and have its own art system. These seals reflected Qi Baishi seal carving’s development; especially the seals with poem sentences, these seals offered very important documents for Qi Baishi’s research.

 

         Because of Qi Baishi craved numerous seals; he had a courtesy names owners of three hundred seals, and he often use this seal on his paintings. By coincidence, the Qi Baishi’s seals collection of Beijing Fine Academy is three hundred, this is the first time that these seals displayed as a whole in an exhibition.

 

         Qi Baishi is one of Chinese most famous artists in the 20th century both in home and overseas. His poem, calligraphy, painting and seal carving are all full of character and got very high art achievement, Qi interested in carving since he was young, he learned from Li Brother, followed Zhe style especially Ding and Huang then turned to Zhao Zhiqian, he joined the stele character with seal carving and eventually formed his own art style. After settled in Beijing, he learned calligraphy from Han San Gong Shan Bei and Wu Tian Fa Shen Ji Bei, with strong comparison and often using spurt method, Qi’s seal carving style is very distinguish in Chinese modern seal carving circle.

 

          The basic characters of Qi Baishi’s seal carving are bold, high skills and candor, Qi Baishi’s carving had made great influence in modern Chinese seal carving history, his thought and his art viewpoint is conveyed by his seals, audience can find his miss of homeland, innovation spirit, simplicity etc. in his artworks. Seal carving in Zhan Guo, Qing and Han dynasty is mostly a technology, then in Ming and Qing dynasties’ seal cutting became a kind of art, however seal cutting became a way to convey emotion and dreams.

 

         On display the exhibition design focus on human, for audiences’ further understand seal carving the exhibition add The Origin of Seal Carving Section, for better display of Chinese seal carving art and the relationship with calligraphy and painting, the exhibition displayed some paintings which association with the three seals; the exhibition also add seal carving materials, main tools and knife using methods for more people know more about the knowledge. After research and classification, this the fist time Beijing Fine Art Academy show these seals in a form of exhibition, we look forward to offer a great enjoy for the public and also make contribution to contemporary seal carving’s development.
