“Space Shadow flows with Fragrance ”- The Exhibition of Beijing Fine Art Academy’s Yu Feian Collection

        Mr. Yu Feian (1889-1959), typical Chinese contemporary claborate-style heavy color painter, he is the illustrious representative of “Beijing School” flower-and-bird painting.

 

        Born in a well-known literary family, Yu has received traditional culture’s edification from childhood, he has been an apprentice of folk painters in his 20s, then specializes his self-studies on flower-and-bird painting technique. From Chen Laolian traces to Five Dynasties, Northen and Southern Song Dynasties, his flower-and-bird painting technique has obtained Zhao Ji’s renal spirit and referred to folk arts such as silk embroidery etc, to form a precise, elegant and splendid style. He is a master of the revival of “Beijing School” flower-and-bird painting, entitled “Southern Chen, Northern Yu”with artist Zhen Zhifo.

 

        Yu Feian knows very well of the pleasure of ancient sketches, while accept the modern sketch methods. He values on-site sketches and accumulates numbers of materials, tries to experience the artistic conception of nature such as wind, sun, rain and movement of day and night. He has reached the circumstance of “magic creation of nature” that when he closes his eyes, the scene present immediate. Yu’s painting technique was exquisite and profound, his artistic language is dynomizing and wealthy.

 

        His brushwork is thin, sturdy, plump and full of changes. With the atmospheric colour expression, he was particularly good at the usage of colour contrast; his usage of area and purity changes to show colours’ bright and sedately charm.

 

        Yu Feian has always perseveres tradition; he commits himself to the claborate-style flower-and-bird painting’s transformation from institutions to public esthetic sentiment. His work suits both refined and popular tastes but still maintain master’s demeanor. He is indeed one of the finest Chinese claborate-style painters in 20th century.
