In commemoration of Ms. Jiang Caiping (1934-2026), the esteemed master of contemporary Chinese meticulous heavy-color painting (Gongbi Zhongcai), the exhibition "A Promise with Painting: Art of Jiang Caiping" is jointly presented by the Central Academy of Fine Arts, the China Gongbi Art Society, the China Female Artists Association, and the Beijing Fine Art Academy (BFAA). The exhibition opened with heartwarming reverence on April 30, 2026, at the Art Museum of BFAA. Bringing together Jiang's meticulous heavy-color paintings, creative sketches, and outstanding works from life spanning over half a century, the exhibition vividly showcases the splendor of the Gongbi Zhongcai tradition. Structured around three thematic sections—"Shaping the Spirit with Heavy Color," "Honoring the Dao and Esteeming Objects," and "A Myriad Worlds in Color and Ink," the exhibition presents the artist's creative career and artistic life from multiple perspectives.

"A promise with painting, an unfading love for a millennium" was from a poem by Emperor Huizong of Song (Zhao Ji, 1082–1135). At the sixtieth year of her artistic career, Jiang Caiping wrote a reflective essay under the title A Promise with Painting. The exhibition title, calligraphed by Jiang's husband Pan Shixun, is both a moving echo of her original artistic aspiration and a tribute to her lifelong devotion to painting. As one of the first-generation artists nurtured by the People's Republic of China, Jiang Caiping stood as a representative figure in the field of contemporary meticulous heavy-color painting. With unwavering dedication on three fronts—artistic creation, art education, and the research on painting materials—she revitalized the traditional Gongbi Zhongcai tradition within a contemporary context.

The exhibition is divided into three sections, featuring over sixty masterful works spanning more than five decades. These include meticulous heavy-color paintings, flower-and-bird and landscape works, classical figures, creative sketches, teaching documents, and self-developed pigments, offering a multifaceted view of Jiang's artistic development.

Shaping the Spirit with Heavy Color  – The Spiritual Expression of Meticulous Heavy-Color Figures

Meticulous heavy-color figure painting lies at the heart of Jiang's creative practice. Rooted in tradition, she delved deeply into technical mastery, preserving the linear power of the ancient "bone method" and the chromatic wisdom of "applying color according to category." With ethnic customs and humanistic spirit infused into her brushwork, her lines are refined, her colors deep and resonant, achieving a synthesis of classical discipline and modern sensibility, and fully embodying the spiritual heights of the Gongbi Zhongcai tradition.

Honoring the Dao and Esteeming Objects – Pioneering Paths in Teaching and Technique Research

Jiang Caiping was not only a creator but also a distinguished educator in the field of meticulous heavy-color painting. She developed a teaching system known as the "Three New Disciplines" for Chinese painting, refined the six essential elements of Zhongcai, set forth the pedagogical philosophy of "using creative practice to drive the learning of technique and materials" and cultivated numerous disciples. Her abundant teaching notes, creative sketches, and other invaluable documents, along with her self-developed high-temperature crystalline pigments, attest to her educational dedication and her scholarly spirit of "honoring the Dao and esteeming objects." From systematic teaching frameworks to handwritten insights, from technical instruction to material research—every word and line carries on the tradition; every sheet and page embodies meticulous craftsmanship. The exhibition also features a reconstruction of Jiang's studio and display her last work, Iranian Girl, offering a complete picture of her lifelong commitment to painting and the enduring resonance of her art.

A Myriad Worlds in Color and Ink – Artistic Versatility in Exploring Diverse Themes

Jiang had a broad and inclusive artistic vision, with creation themes covering figures, flowers and birds, landscapes, ballerine and opera characters. She also created many outstanding pastel sketches. Boasting consummate skill and delicate sensibility, she moved fluidly between traditional charm and modern aesthetics, continuously pushing artistic boundaries outward. Her themes are diverse, yet her artistic integrity remains constant; her brushwork is precise and refined, her expressions comprehensive and evocative. All these showcase her great inclusiveness and unceasing innovation as an art master.

With a lifetime of devotion to painting and a lifelong dedication to artistic creation, Jiang Caiping embraced tradition with the greatest sincerity and pioneered new directions with the spirit of exploration. Through her meticulous heavy-color paintings, she inscribed a brilliant chapter of art for the time.
