Xu Yan Sun was famous for meticulous figure painting. His given name is Cao, style name is Yan Sun and nickname is Shuang Hong Louzhu. His hometown is Shen County of Hebei province and was born in Beijing. He studied law in the Chaoyang University in early years. It was instinct that take him on the way of painting.In his early paintings, he learned painting by himself and guided by meticulous painter Yu Ming，and then took painting as a career. He had taught at the Chinese Painting Research Association, Jinghua Academy of Fine Arts, Peking Arts College and learned from Liu Lingcang, Wang Shuhui, Huang Jun. In 1950s, he did comic book creation in the People's Fine Arts Publishing House at first, and then became vice president of Beijing Chinese Painting Academy and a member of Chinese Arts Creative Committee. Xu Yansun was an influential traditional painter in Beijing and was good at Xieyi (freehand brushwork in traditional Chinese painting , characterized by vivid expression and bold outline). He created based on historical figure stories. He was skilled on the meticulous painting and paid attention to the use of lines. He used smooth strokes, bright colors and had precise beautiful, calm, elegant style. For the relationship between tradition and modernity in the paintings, he had his own opinion: we should be creatiive, but we could not ignore the national tradition and the techniques embodied in ethnic style. In 1940s, he painted a story of the heros with line drawing every day and published in the "Morning News". Then these works were published as "Red House Paintings Collention".
